Luke 23 (Douay-Rheims)
Passage
And the whole crowd of them rose up and led him to Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying: We have found this man misleading our nation and forbidding tribute to be given to Caesar and saying that he is Christ the king. And Pilate asked him, saying: Are you the king of the Jews? And he answered and said: You say it. And Pilate said to the chief priests and to the crowds: I find no cause in this man. But they insisted all the more, saying: He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place. But when Pilate heard Galilee, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was himself also in Jerusalem in those days. And Herod, seeing Jesus, was very glad: for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard many things about him; and he hoped to see some sign done by him. And he questioned him with many words. But he answered him nothing. And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, earnestly accusing him. And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him, putting a white garment on him: and sent him back to Pilate. And Herod and Pilate became friends that same day: for before they had been enemies to one another. And Pilate, calling together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, Said to them: You have brought this man to me as one who misleads the people. And behold, I, having examined him before you, find no cause in this man in the things of which you accuse him. No, nor did Herod either. For I sent you to him: and behold, nothing worthy of death has been done by him. I will punish him therefore and release him. Now he was obliged to release one to them at the feast day. But the whole crowd cried out together, saying: Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas: Who had been thrown into prison for a certain uprising made in the city and for a murder. And Pilate spoke to them again, wanting to release Jesus. But they cried again, saying: Crucify him, Crucify him. And he said to them the third time: Why, what evil has this man done? I find no cause of death in him. I will punish him therefore and let him go. But they kept insisting with loud voices, demanding that he be crucified. And their voices prevailed. And Pilate gave sentence that what they demanded should be done. And he released to them the one who had been thrown into prison for murder and uprising, whom they had asked for. But Jesus he handed over to their will. And as they led him away, they seized a certain Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country; and they laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus. And a great crowd of people followed him, and of women, who were mourning and lamenting him. But Jesus, turning to them, said: Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me; but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days shall come in which they will say: Blessed are the barren and the wombs that have not borne and the breasts that have not nursed. Then they shall begin to say to the mountains: Fall upon us. And to the hills: Cover us. For if in the green wood they do these things, what shall be done in the dry? And two others, who were criminals, were also led with him to be put to death. And when they had come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified him there: and the robbers, one on the right hand and the other on the left. And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. But they, dividing his garments, cast lots. And the people stood watching. And the rulers with them mocked him, saying: He saved others: let him save himself, if he is the Christ, the chosen of God. And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar, And saying: If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself. And there was also an inscription written over him in letters of Greek and Latin and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. And one of those robbers who were hanged blasphemed him, saying: If you are the Christ, save yourself and us. But the other answered and rebuked him, saying: Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly: for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds. But this man has done no evil. And he said to Jesus: Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom. And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to you: This day you shall be with me in paradise. And it was almost the sixth hour: and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in the middle. And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said: Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. And saying this, he gave up the ghost. Now the centurion, seeing what had happened, glorified God, saying: Indeed this was a just man. And all the crowd of those who had come together to that sight and saw the things that were done returned, striking their breasts. And all who knew him, and the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood far off, watching these things. And behold, there was a man named Joseph, who was a member of the council, a good and just man, (He had not consented to their plan and their deeds) of Arimathea, a city of Judea: who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. And taking him down, he wrapped him in fine linen and laid him in a tomb that was cut in stone, in which no one had ever yet been laid. And it was the day of the Parasceve: and the sabbath was drawing near. And the women who had come with him from Galilee followed after and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. And returning, they prepared spices and ointments: and on the sabbath day they rested, according to the commandment.
