Luke 6 (Douay-Rheims)
Passage
And it happened on the second first sabbath that, as he went through the grain fields, his disciples plucked the ears and ate them, rubbing them in their hands. And some of the Pharisees said to them: Why do you do what is not lawful on the sabbath days? And Jesus answered them and said: Have you not read even this, what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him: How he went into the house of God and took and ate the bread of proposition and gave it to those who were with him, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests alone? And he said to them: The Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. And it happened also, on another sabbath, that he entered the synagogue and taught. And there was a man whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and Pharisees watched to see if he would heal on the sabbath, so that they might find a charge against him. But he knew their thoughts and said to the man who had the withered hand: Arise and stand up in the midst. And rising, he stood up. Then Jesus said to them: I ask you, is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good or to do evil? To save life or to destroy it? And looking around at them all, he said to the man: Stretch out your hand. And he stretched it out. And his hand was restored. And they were filled with fury: and they talked with one another about what they might do to Jesus. And it happened in those days that he went out to a mountain to pray: and he spent the whole night in prayer to God. And when day had come, he called his disciples to him: and he chose twelve of them (whom he also named apostles): Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called Zelotes, And Jude the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became the traitor. And coming down with them, he stood on a level place: and with him the company of his disciples and a very great crowd of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the sea coast, both of Tyre and Sidon, Who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all the crowd tried to touch him: for power went out from him and healed all. And he, lifting up his eyes on his disciples, said: Blessed are you poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now: for you shall be filled. Blessed are you who weep now: for you shall laugh. Blessed shall you be when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you and shall insult you and cast out your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of man. Be glad in that day and rejoice: for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers treated the prophets. But woe to you who are rich: for you have your consolation. Woe to you who are filled: for you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now: for you shall mourn and weep. Woe to you when men shall speak well of you: for in the same way their fathers treated the false prophets. But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you and pray for those who falsely accuse you. And to him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer also the other. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your coat also. Give to everyone who asks you: and from him who takes away your goods, do not ask for them back. And as you would have men do to you, do also to them in the same way. And if you love those who love you, what thanks do you deserve? For sinners also love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what thanks do you deserve? For sinners also do this. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what thanks do you deserve? For sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much in return. But love your enemies: do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return: and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the sons of the Highest. For he is kind to the ungrateful and to the evil. Be therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not: and you shall not be judged. Condemn not: and you shall not be condemned. Forgive: and you shall be forgiven. Give: and it shall be given to you: good measure and pressed down and shaken together and running over shall they pour into your lap. For with the same measure that you measure out, it shall be measured to you again. And he also told them a parable: Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his teacher: but everyone shall be perfect if he is like his teacher. And why do you see the speck in your brother's eye, but do not notice the beam that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother: Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye, when you yourself do not see the beam in your own eye? Hypocrite, first take the beam out of your own eye: and then you shall see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. For there is no good tree that brings forth evil fruit: nor an evil tree that brings forth good fruit. For every tree is known by its fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns: nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. And why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do the things which I say? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you whom he is like. He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation upon a rock. And when a flood came, the stream beat hard against that house: and it could not shake it: for it was founded on a rock. But he who hears and does not do is like a man building his house upon the earth without a foundation: against which the stream beat hard. And immediately it fell: and the ruin of that house was great.
