Luke 8 (Douay-Rheims)
Passage
And it happened afterwards that he traveled through the cities and towns, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, And certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who is called Magdalene, out of whom seven devils had gone out, And Joanna the wife of Chusa, Herod's steward, and Susanna and many others who provided for him out of their own means. And when a very great crowd had gathered together and people were hurrying to him out of the cities, he spoke in a parable. The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside. And it was trodden down: and the birds of the air ate it up. And some other seed fell upon rock. And as soon as it had sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some other fell among thorns. And the thorns, growing up with it, choked it. And some other fell upon good ground and, having sprung up, yielded fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, he cried out: Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear. And his disciples asked him what this parable might be. And he said to them: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, so that seeing they may not see and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. And those by the wayside are the ones who hear: then the devil comes and takes the word out of their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved. Now those upon the rock are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with joy: and these have no roots: for they believe for a while and in time of temptation they fall away. And what fell among thorns are those who have heard and, going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life and yield no fruit. But what is on the good ground are those who, in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it and bring forth fruit in patience. Now no one lighting a candle covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed: but he sets it upon a candlestick, so that those who come in may see the light. For there is nothing secret that shall not be made known, nor hidden that shall not be known and come out into the open. Take heed therefore how you hear. For whoever has, to him shall be given: and whoever has not, that also which he thinks he has shall be taken away from him. And his mother and brethren came to him: and they could not get to him because of the crowd. And it was told him: Your mother and your brethren are standing outside, wanting to see you. And he answered and said to them: My mother and my brethren are those who hear the word of God and do it. And it happened on a certain day that he got into a little boat with his disciples. And he said to them: Let us go over to the other side of the lake. And they set out. And while they were sailing, he slept. And a windstorm came down upon the lake: and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they came and woke him, saying: Master, we are perishing. But he, arising, rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And it stopped: and there was a calm. And he said to them: Where is your faith? And they, being afraid, wondered, saying to one another: Who do you think this is, that he commands both the winds and the sea: and they obey him? And they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. And when he had come out onto the land, he was met by a certain man who had had a devil for a very long time. And he wore no clothes: and he did not live in a house, but in the tombs. And when he saw Jesus, he fell down before him. And crying out with a loud voice, he said: What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I beg you, do not torment me. For he was commanding the unclean spirit to go out of the man. For many times it had seized him: and he was bound with chains and kept in fetters: and breaking the bonds, he was driven by the devil into the deserts. And Jesus asked him, saying: What is your name? And he said: Legion. Because many devils had entered into him. And they begged him not to command them to go into the abyss. And there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain: and they begged him to allow them to enter into them. And he allowed them. The devils therefore went out of the man and entered the swine. And the herd rushed violently down a steep place into the lake and were drowned. When those who fed them saw what was done, they fled and told it in the city and in the villages. And they went out to see what had been done. And they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the devils had departed, sitting at his feet, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. And those who had seen it also told them how he had been healed from the legion. And all the crowd of the country of the Gerasenes begged him to depart from them: for they were seized with great fear. And he, getting into the boat, went back again. Now the man from whom the devils had departed begged him that he might be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying: Return to your house and tell what great things God has done for you. And he went through the whole city, proclaiming what great things Jesus had done for him. And it happened that when Jesus had returned, the crowd welcomed him: for they were all waiting for him. And behold, there came a man whose name was Jairus: and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at the feet of Jesus, begging him to come into his house: For he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. And it happened, as he went, that he was pressed in by the crowds. And there was a certain woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all she had on physicians and could not be healed by any. She came behind him and touched the hem of his garment: and immediately the flow of her blood stopped. And Jesus said: Who is it that touched me? And as all were denying it, Peter and those who were with him said: Master, the crowds press around you and push against you; and you say, Who touched me? And Jesus said: Somebody has touched me; for I know that power has gone out from me. And the woman, seeing that she was not hidden, came trembling and fell down before his feet and declared before all the people why she had touched him, and how she was immediately healed. But he said to her: Daughter, your faith has made you whole. Go your way in peace. While he was still speaking, someone came to the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him: Your daughter is dead: do not trouble him. And Jesus, hearing this word, answered the father of the girl: Fear not. Only believe: and she shall be saved. And when he had come to the house, he did not allow anyone to go in with him, except Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the girl. And all were weeping and mourning for her. But he said: Weep not. The girl is not dead, but sleeping. And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But he, taking her by the hand, cried out, saying: Girl, arise. And her spirit returned: and she arose immediately. And he told them to give her something to eat. And her parents were astonished, and he ordered them to tell no one what had been done.
