First Communion: Examination of Conscience
A gentle, child-friendly guide for Grade 1–2 students preparing for Reconciliation before First Holy Communion.
Download worksheet (sample)Before you begin
This lesson supports First Reconciliation preparation. Keep language positive—focus on God's mercy, not fear.
Discussion (10 minutes)
Explain that examining our conscience means thinking quietly about how we have loved God and others, and where we can do better.
Guided questions
Use these prompts aloud; allow silence between each:
- Have I prayed—or remembered to talk to God?
- Have I been kind to my family and friends?
- Have I told the truth?
- Have I shared and taken turns?
- Is there anything I should say sorry for?
Activity
Students complete the worksheet in pairs with a catechist circulating. Invite volunteers to share one thing they are thankful for—not private sins.
Closing
Remind children: Jesus always welcomes us back. Practice the Act of Contrition together.
For catechists
See your parish program for the approved form of absolution and any required parent handouts.
